Frank Butler Beachfront Park East is an Atlantic beach park on A1A South, and it carries one of the most important stories on Anastasia Island. In 1927 Frank B. Butler, a Black businessman who owned the Palace Market in Lincolnville, began buying land here to create a beach resort for African Americans during segregation. Butler Beach grew to include an inn, a casino, a pavilion and at least eleven Black owned businesses, and it was reputedly the only beach between Jacksonville and Daytona that Black visitors were allowed to use. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stayed at Butler's Inn in 1964. The county took over the land after Butler's death and dedicated the parks in his name in 1980.
Today the park is a practical base for a beach day, with parking, a pavilion, grills, restrooms and showers for rinsing off sand. A boardwalk with about 21 steps leads over the dunes to the beach, and there is no ramp.
St. Johns County allows leashed dogs on its beach, so your dog can join you on the sand on a leash no longer than 12 feet. The park is open from dawn to dusk.
